The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District Hydrographic Survey Program is responsible for maintaining over 300 miles of navigable waterways across Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and Northern West Virginia. Our mission is to ensure safe and efficient navigation by providing accurate and up-to-date underwater mapping and channel condition assessments.
Through state-of-the-art hydrographic survey technologies, including multibeam and single-beam sonar, our team monitors river depths, sediment build-up, and channel alignment to support the maintenance and operation of locks and dams, as well as to guide dredging operations. These efforts are critical in supporting commercial navigation, flood risk management, and public safety throughout the region.
Our work ensures that vital waterborne commerce, recreational boating, and regional industries dependent on river transport continue to operate smoothly and safely.
